Music theory games are an excellent way to start learning music theory, but it needs to be backed up with a good music education strategy.
There are a lot of ways of teaching music theory. When you teach it to children, you have to be creative to get their full attention and maintain it throughout the lesson. One creative way of doing so is through using music theory games.
Here are a few tips when choosing music theory games:
1) Keep the variety. Use a mix of music theory games, along with music theory worksheets
2) Look for games that concentrate on only one skill at a time. For example, pitch games should use non-specific rhythm notes, so that the student can acquire the skill to read the pitches independently of the rhythm study.
3) Make sure you don’t over-do the games. Music is a practical subject and should be kept practical throughout and theory should be kept a small part of the subject.
